1Cause
Acidification alters the calcification processes which limit the development of corals, shelled animals and plankton which are at the base of the marine food chain. All marine biodiversity is thus threatened.
1Consequence
The decline of plankton impacts the entire marine food chain and therefore fish resources.
2Other possible consequences
Ocean acidification is a stressor for warm-water corals, but it pales in comparison to the heat waves that will virtually wipe them out even with global warming of +2°C.
Plankton are at the base of the marine food chain. Fewer plankton means fewer (or smaller) fish.
